Transferring Footage to the Computer from the Canon XA10

Unfortunately the process for transferring footage from the Canon XA10 to the computer is not as simple as it could be. Thank you Canon, for forcing us to use this bizarre proprietary format and process! Please follow these steps all the way through:

  1. Remove the SD card from the camera.

  2. Insert the SD card into the back of the iMac computer. The slot is on the right side near the USB ports.

  3. Once the SD card shows up on the Desktop, double click to open it.

  4. Double click the file marked AVCHD (Do NOT copy this file off of the card-- it contains all footage captured on the camera)
  5. This will open a list of thumbnails. You can double click the thumbnails to open them in Quicktime, or simply look at the list to see which ones you need to import.
  6. If you are only importing one or two clips, the easiest next step is to open them in Quicktime using the method in Step 5, and then File -> Save them to wherever you want to store them.
  7. If you are importing more than two clips, you will need to write down or make a mental note of which clip numbers you need to import. (Don't tell me I didn't warn you this would be somewhat convoluted; thanks Canon!)
  8. Close the clip viewer.
  9. Right click the file marked AVCHD.
  10. Click Show Package Contents.
  11. Right click the file marked BVHD.
  12. Click Show Package Contents.
  13. Drag your clips to wherever you want to store them.

NOTE: You will probably want to store your clips on a cloud storage solution such as Dropbox, UVA Box, or the Wilson Media Studio Server.
