Problem Cheat Sheet

This will cover many of the most common problems you will get while sitting at the desk.

1. Problem: the patron wants a camera / etc., but doesn't have a reservation.

Solution: the patron needs to make a reservation or you need to make a reservation for them. DON'T give them a camera without a reservation or make a reservation in your name.

To masquerade as a user, select Book By Category -> Equipment from the menu, then enter their user ID as shown below.

>>> NOTE - If they don't show up in the system, it's because they haven't logged into it yet. Quickly have them log into the system via Netbadge. A fast way to do this is to open a Private Window in your browser and have them log in. (If you try to do this with a regular New Tab or New Window in your browser, it will use your current Netbadge login, hence the need for the Private Window).

2. Problem: the patron recorded to the Canon XA10 camera, but used the internal storage.

Solution: grab a usb cable from the charging station behind the consultant desk and plug it into the usb port on the side of the camera (it's hidden under a panel under the hand strap). Plug the usb into a computer and power on the camera. Follow the directions on the camera's touchscreen to connect it to the computer.

3. Problem: sound on teleprompter camera is messed up.

  • For the lavalier mic, make sure the receiver is turned on and plugged into the XLR input on the camera.
  • Make sure the transmitter is turned on and the same frequency as the receiver. (To set the frequency, open the battery cover on the receiver and then the transmitter, and press "set" and then the "up" button until you see Frequency Preset. Press "set" and then select the Preset Group with up/down, then "set" and the Preset Number with up/down, and press "set" to finalize it.)
  • Make sure the camera is set to "External Input". The input selector is on the side of the camera opposite the XLR inputs. Make sure its on "Ext" and that "Att" is off.
  • For the shotgun mic, make sure the camera power is set to "+48v".

4. Problem: the teleprompter won't turn on.

  • Make sure the teleprompter is plugged in.
  • Make sure the teleprompter HDMI cable is plugged in to both the laptop and the computer.
  • Make sure the teleprompter is turned on. (When it's off there will be a red light on the side; the on/off button is right next to the light.)

5. Problem: there isn't a card in the teleprompter camera.

  • Check the card slots on the back of the iMacs; sometimes patrons leave the cards there.
  • If you can't find a card, there may be one in the lost and found box by the coffee machine.
  • If you STILL can't find a card, there are extras in the white cabinet by the door (with the red dot).
